Ula Jones

Ula has long dark hair and is wearing a black denim jacket, black leggings, and grey and black gloves. She is crouching and hiding behind her cupped hands holding a startled-looking crab. What looks like a helmet is dangling from her wrist. In the background are assorted rocks on a beach with water and a few people.

Award/Details

NSF IRIS Internship Program

In addition to her double major and triple minor at Western, Jones spent the summer of 2022 as a research assistant at Brown University in the IRIS undergraduate internship program, where she examined the propagation of Rayleigh waves from various earthquakes through Alaska. It was expected to shed light on some of the unusual aspects of the Alaskan subduction zone, visible on tomographic maps. After graduating in 2023, Ula hoped to broaden her understanding of geophysics and other interdisciplinary sciences and go on to study planetary science or another application of geophysics.
