Award/Details

2014 Critical Languages Scholarship / Japanese Governmental Scholarship

An Honors student, Mika studied both Chinese and Japanese during her time at Western. Having grown up in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, Mika was profoundly shaped by the wide array of ethnic and racially diverse experiences surrounding her. She won two Critical Language Scholarships (one to Japan, one to China) and was also the recipient of a prestigious Japanese Government Scholarship for Japanese Studies during the 2014 - 2015 academic year. She raised money to do volunteer relief for those affected by the 2013 tsunami and earthquake in Japan. Mika graduated from Western magna cum laude with Honors in June 2016, an outstanding graduate in both her majors, receiving several scholarships during her time here. After returning to the US and graduating, she was considering moving to Japan and possibly go to graduate school on her journey to continue living abroad and help the communities around her with her strong language skills.
