Lindsay Little
Award/Details
Lindsay has taught Spanish, math, and history at middle and high school levels, and was an Instructional Technology TA while at Western. Little wanted to build on the Spanish she learned as a child in order to teach it in the US after returning from her Fulbright. Since she had previously studied in Puerto Rico, her family is from Mexico, and the test to teach Spanish in Washington is in Castilian Spanish, so she decided to teach in Spain to build up her skills and have a new cultural experience. The school she taught at near Galicia had electronics and marine sciences programs, which worked well with her background living in a fishing community and her dad being an electronic technician. Little’s community project centered on poetry, working with students from the US as well as in Spain, and she hoped to also learn Galician and take cooking classes while in the country. She said her ELL endorsement from Western prepared her well to teach English to her students while being supportive of their culture and heritage languages. Little wants anyone interested in studying abroad to know that they are deserving and capable, should ask for help when needed, and that the worst thing that could happen is being told to apply again next year, which only strengthens an application.
