Award/Details

2019 Hollings, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; 2017 Marine Science Scholars Program; 2022 NSF Fellowship

Dexter had always been interested in the world around him growing up, which pulled him into the scientific world. Living in Seattle, Washington, he was always drawn to the coasts and the abundance of life found on the beaches. A high school senior year oceanography field trip to NOAA's campus in Sand Point, Seattle inspired Dexter and he fell in love with marine science. He decided NOAA was the career path for him and set his sights on pursuing a pathway into the agency. After being accepted into Western Washington University, and the Marine Science Distinguished Scholars Program, he worked hard to build his academic knowledge and research skills as they related to ocean sciences. Dexter heard about the Hollings and worked diligently on his application to create the opportunity he’d been waiting for. After being awarded the Hollings Scholarship, he grew ecstatic about starting his internship with NOAA, which he could use as a stepping stone to a career with them full of meaningful research and endless discovery. He also pursued his passions by volunteering for the North Stewards and participating in scientific projects such as surveys and maintenance.

What are they up to now

Dexter’s work at the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration as a summer intern prepared him for a deep-sea research cruise to the Gulf of Mexico. Dexter recently won a $35,000 National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship Award to do graduate work here at Western. He is now a marine research technologist working at the Shannon Point Marine Center.
