Award/Details

2022 Fulbright, Spain

Gus graduated in 2020 with a 3.97 and a double major in History and Interdisciplinary (Education) Studies. He plans to teach English to elementary or high-school students in Spain, where he plans to continue to be involved in outdoor recreation with the local community, and to provide instruction, transportation, and gear for sports such as mountain biking to disadvantaged youth. Currently, he provides skiing instructions to middle-schoolers in Alyeska, AK, and previously was a Trip Leader at Western’s Outdoor Recreation Center after becoming one of the few who had hiked the entire 2600 mile long Pacific Crest Trail. He also works at Kasuun Elementary in Anchorage as a long term substitute, previously volunteering at Western’s tutoring center for two years. Gus was also a Boman Family Distinguished Scholar, and a recipient of the WWU Leadership Forum Scholarship and Fairhaven’s Adventure in Learning Grant. With the latter, he traveled to Chile, Ecuador, Peru, and Argentina, where several years prior he worked on a ship based there in the Southern Sea. He also traveled to Malaysia and Indonesia, and Nepal and India to learn about public health. With his host community in Spain, Gus hopes to host reading groups and conversations to share his vast array of adventures as an Alaskan, and a global ambassador. After completing the Fulbright, Gus plans to return to the US and complete a Masters of Education before going back to Alaska to teach. His time as an ETA in Spain will further inform and expand his teaching abilities to help him better serve his students in Alaska.
